Packaging

Our packaging has many functions, the most important of which are product protection and ensuring the safety and quality of our oat products, mueslis and porridges.

Packaging helps us protect our products and ensure product quality and safety for our consumers. At the same time, we as a food manufacturer have an important lever here in reducing our resource consumption.

Our top priority is always to reduce our packaging to the bare minimum. We are also increasing our use of recycled and recyclable materials and testing innovative solutions.

Paper and cardboard: environmentally friendly and recyclable

Paper and cardboard are considered resource-saving packaging materials because they are made from the renewable raw material wood and are easily recycled. We have already achieved some successes in this area:

  • Our muesli and porridge folding boxes as well as the packaging for our Oat Bits are made of approximately 95 % recycled paper.

  • Our transport packaging for retail is also made of around 90 % recycled corrugated cardboard.

  • Our pure cereal products such as Delicate Kölln Oat Flakes, Regular Rolled Kölln Oat Flakes and organic flakes are packaged in a two-layer paper bag or a folding box with a greaseproof special paper inner bag and can be recycled with other paper waste.

Plastic film packaging: We optimise recycling

When paper can't provide the necessary product protection, we rely on optimised plastic packaging. Particularly moisture-sensitive products, such as our crunchy muesli mixes, require a protective packaging solution. Since certain EU regulations apply here regarding recycled plastic materials in direct contact with food, we focus on using recyclable materials.

  • Our Oat Crispies, oat pillow products and large muesli packs are made from easily recyclable mono-materials.

  • The classic and crunchy muesli mixes are packed in folding boxes with a plastic inner bag to ensure freshness and quality.

Our aim is to continually find more sustainable packaging solutions and further improve recyclability. We are therefore continuously working to make our packaging more environmentally friendly.

Key facts of our research study

Consciously choosing sustainable packaging – but how?

Sustainable packaging is important to us – but you can also actively contribute. Consumers play a crucial role in supporting environmentally friendly packaging and making sustainable purchasing decisions.

What are the key criteria consumers consider when shopping? How do they understand and define sustainability? What information on packaging is important to them?

To this end, we commissioned a qualitative research study from the Rheingold Institute in Cologne. All insights from the study are available for download here (in German).

  • First comes the product, then the packaging

Many consumers focus on the product first. While sustainable packaging can influence purchasing decisions, it is not always the deciding factor. However, with your choice you can help companies further expand their sustainable alternatives.

  • Sustainable packaging adds value to products

Environmentally friendly packaging often makes products appear healthier and more natural. Materials with a paper-like feel are perceived as more valuable and sustainable. Pay attention to such characteristics in order to make conscious decisions.

  • Environmental labels - not always a guarantee of sustainability

Many consumers only trust established labels such as Organic or WWF. Manufacturers' own seals, on the other hand, are often viewed critically. Educate yourself about certifications and their meaning in order to better categorise sustainable packaging.

  • Muesli and sustainable packaging - a perfect combination

Muesli in sustainable packaging is perceived as healthier and of higher quality. By making your choice, you can help to ensure that sustainable packaging solutions become more widespread.
