Oats are not just a grain – for us at Kölln they are a real passion! For over 200 years we have relied on their valuable properties and made them the focus of our products.

Oats: The local superfood

Did you know? In 2017, oats were named Medicinal Plant of the Year in Germany. No wonder, because as a wholegrain product it supports balanced blood sugar and cholesterol levels – and all naturally. A real superfood that fits into every healthy lifestyle.

To ensure that our oat products are always of the best quality, we use a mixture of German, Scandinavian and regional oats. Oats find optimal conditions, especially in Finland and Sweden: mild temperatures, long summer days and nutrient-rich soils ensure large, light and aromatic oat kernels – the perfect basis for our Kölln products.

Almonds are real all-rounders. Whether whole, ground, chopped, roasted or salted – they come to the table in a wide variety of variations. In our Kölln Oat Granola Honey-Nut we use sliced ​​almonds with their typical cinnamon-brown skin. They not only give the muesli an extra crunch, but also a slightly sweet and nutty flavour.

This is how the almond harvest works

Almond peak season is from the end of August to mid-October. To make harvesting easier, the trees receive less water a few weeks beforehand – this means the fruits dry out better and are easier to shake from the tree. Shaking machines take over the job and remove the almonds from the tree as soon as the pulp bursts.

By the way: our almonds come from California, the largest almond-growing region in the world. A whopping 75 % of the global harvest comes from there.

The cashew tree thrives in tropical climates and produces special fruits: cashew apples. But be careful, the name is misleading! They are not actually real fruits, but thickened fruit stalks. The real fruit is the cashew nut, which hangs at the bottom of the cashew apple.

The nut is enclosed in a wooden shell, which contains the cashew kernel – what we know as the cashew nut. What makes the nut so special is that only one kernel grows per cashew apple. This makes harvesting and processing very labour-intensive.

Where do cashews grow?

The cashew tree originally comes from Brazil. In the 16th century, it was brought to India to prevent coastal erosion there. Today, cashews from India are an important ingredient in our Kölln Oat Granola Honey-Nut, where their creamy, mild flavour perfectly complements the crunchy mixture.

Honey is much more than just a sweetener – it is a truly natural product that is produced by honey bees for their own food supply.
