Lactose intolerance: causes, symptoms & how to enjoy lactose-free with Kölln

Lactose intolerance means that your body cannot properly digest milk sugar (lactose). This is due to the enzyme lactase, which normally breaks down lactose into its components glucose and galactose.

If this enzyme is missing or only present in small quantities, unsplit lactose enters the intestine – and causes unpleasant symptoms such as flatulence or diarrhoea. But don't worry: enjoying lactose-free is easier than ever today – and with Kölln anyway!

Lactose intolerance – your questions, our answers:

How should I modify my diet if I am lactose intolerant?

Diagnosed with lactose intolerance? It's not a big deal, but it does require a small adjustment! Depending on the severity, this means reducing or completely avoiding foods containing lactose. Alternatively, you can supplement the missing enzyme lactase with supplements – ideally in consultation with your doctor.

Which foods contain lactose?

Milk is obvious – but lactose is also hidden in many other products: from cheese and yogurt to cream, quark and whey, as well as hot chocolate and processed cheese. Even in places you might not expect it – so always check the label! The good news? You can enjoy vegan products and foods labelled "lactose-free" without worry.

What does “lactose-free” mean?

Lactose intolerance doesn't automatically mean zero tolerance. Products labelled "lactose-free" contain less than 0.1 g of lactose per 100 g – barely measurable amounts. For dairy products such as cheese or yogurt, this labelling is even regulated by law. Although there is no fixed regulation for other foods, the 0.1 % limit usually applies here too.

This means: Anything labelled “lactose-free” is a safe bet for you!

Are oat drinks a lactose-free alternative?

For many people, cow's milk is simply a part of life – in coffee, muesli or baking. But what if you want to enjoy a lactose-free or plant-based alternative? Easy! Oat drinks add variety to your glass and your kitchen. Whether pure, in muesli or as a secret ingredient for creamy desserts – the mild, slightly sweet flavour makes them the perfect alternative. No compromises, but with extra enjoyment!
