Dates

Dates grow in palm gardens and produce fruit every two years – and not in short supply. A single tree can support up to 100 kg of dates. The fruits traditionally dry directly on the tree, using nothing other than the power of the sun.

The harvest varies depending on the region and tradition: it can be either fully automated or still done by hand. After harvesting, the dates are cleaned, further dried and pitted before they end up in our mueslis.

Date palms especially thrive in dry and warm areas – South Asia offers them the ideal conditions. This is exactly where the chopped dates for our Kölln Oat Muesli Fruit – No Added Sugar with 40 % fruit and our Kölln Delicate Bircher Oat Muesli Fruit come from.

Worth knowing

Fun Fact: Did you know that there are male and female date palms?

Yes, you heard that right! Date palms have separate sexes: male palms produce pollen via their stamens. Female palms bear the ovary from which dates develop.

Typically, 2 to 3 male palms are planted for every 100 female palms – this ensures efficient pollination and a bountiful harvest!
