Rye

Rye is a genuine ancient grain and, along with wheat, is one of the most important staple foods. It has been cultivated in Central Europe for over 2,500 years – the Germanic peoples and Celts already used it for bread. No wonder, because rye gives baked goods its typical spicy, slightly bitter taste and ensures a strong, aromatic crust.

Worth knowing

Rye can be recognised by its elongated, bluish to greenish shimmering grains and its square ears, which can grow up to 20 cm long. In addition to bread, it also plays a role in the production of whiskey, vodka and grain alcohol.
